POKER AS A BUSINESS

I am sure you’ve already heard of people playing poker online. This type of online games has gotten very popular and also infamous over the years. Why infamous? The vast majority of people rather lose money than earn some so you could see why a lot of people would consider it a huge waste of time and also a dangerous habit that could turn into addiction.

But this article isn’t for people who can easily lose their heads. Of course, I am well aware that many of the people who are playing online poker for money are very impressionable and not very bright but the true poker players who amass thousands of dollars each and every month are true businessmen. Poker can be played by everyone, from mediocre people to geniuses. And guess what type of people will make the most money? I’ve had friends who bet a whole lot of money on poker and lost it all. They played in a very sloppy way, frequently entering rooms where hardcore players were playing. This is rule number one: never mess with the big guys if you don’t have the proper training and experience. Don’t get fooled by the idea that all you need is luck. That thinking has got more people in trouble than anything else when it comes to poker and online gaming.

GATHER YOUR INFO

A beginner who is smart will always try to amass as much information he can. A person who knows what he’s doing will always try to find out as much as possible on his own as well from other players, people who are much more experienced than him. He will go online and will search for terms like Learn to play poker, playing poker online or how to bluff at poker. And then he will read all those tutorials and tips and get them well inside his mind.

A true and smart player will see a whole lot more of a potential in poker than just a couple of hundreds of bucks in an evening of fun. No, they will treat poker as a business and will try to make a very enjoyable living by playing it online. Of course, 90% of all people who try to make it online poker will sooner or later fail or give up. The next question would be why? What is it that they’re doing wrong? There are so many factors and so many things to discuss here. You must understand that you can indeed make a lot of money from online poker so living a careless life with the money you achieved by spending time on those sites is a pretty realistic thing. But you will never get there just with luck or the notion that all you need is luck. You need way more than that. You need great skills that can only be acquired through heavy learning and lot of playing. You also need experience and good business skills. And why not, a little bit of psychology. Knowing your adversaries and being able to foresee their next moves can be a great weapon in your arsenal.

WHERE ARE YOU?

So, just because you beat your buddies every weekend at poker night doesn’t mean that you’re a professional. You will never be able to make a living with poker if you don'’ start looking at it through the eyes of a businessman. Of course, for this you would need some related skills. You wish you would have paid more attention in school, wouldn’t you? Don’t worry; most of the things they teach us in school can be learned on your own as well.

You should take some time to think on how much you are spending each and every month. In a shorter sentence, assess your current living expenses. This way you will know how much you will need to make in your poker games. Of course, you could shoot higher but at first it’s good to keep your feet on the ground and your head out of the clouds. Remember that there are people who would want to earn 2 thousand dollars a month and others who would like to earn 20 thousand and there’s a big wide difference between those two. Once you settled on a sum you should double it! Never reach for the same amount you need. Always try to reach a bit higher. I’m not talking ten folds but at least double. What is the reason for that? You should really have a cushion to get started. You always need money for rainy days. And with poker the one certainty there is, is that there will always be rainy days. And it would be really nice if those days would be taken care of beforehand. Am I right or not?

If you’re already accustomed to save money for bad days then it will be pretty easy for you. This will definitely come in handy during those bad swings that the poker world will throw at you. When you fail you should never quit. Take a day or two off to dust off and then come back and re-assess what you’ve done wrong. The best way to learn is by making mistakes. Mistakes are the best way to learn your lessons so you shouldn’t be ashamed by your errors. The bad thing is when you don’t learn from your mistakes. That’s when you can have some really serious trouble.

LEARN FROM MISTAKES

A good businessman will always learn from his mistakes and will make sure to never commit them again. But a true and genius businessman will learn from others’ mistakes. So there’s a bi lesson here to learn: talk to people who are already in the poker circuit. Don’t be ashamed of asking advices, especially if you’re at the beginning of the road. Also, the internet is full with hundreds of online poker communities and there you will find a sea of information, ranging from tactics to success or failure stories. Make time to read them all, and read them well. You might find things that you’re already familiar with but you could also come across some stuff you didn’t know and would have never found out.

Poker is everything but an exact science. Even the most prepared and professional players will also have bad days but the trick is in persistence. Don’t let your ego overshadow you; don’t make the same mistakes other have committed before you. Of course, you might have a good streak, some might last for weeks but it takes only a small mistake to lose it all. Always protect your money. And be careful with your greed. Greed can be highly motivational at times but in the end it can burry you.

More and more people pick up online poker. Some start small and end up big while others start big and end up with nothing. It’s all about what type of person you are and how you see things. You can earn a lot of money through online poker, this is clear as daylight. You can find success stories all over the net. But never think those people got to where they are just with luck. If you really want to make a whole lot of money you need to gather all the information you can gather, learn it, and practice it and then start playing. At first choose small tables with small fees. As you build up to more experienced tables you will find out that you have come a long way and that you have bigger experience.

And there’s nothing like the feeling of knowing that you’re the most experienced at the table, even if the table isn’t one for beginners. Be a good psychologist is what I always tell to people who want to make it in the online poker circuit. Never go into a room you don’t belong in. I had lots of friends who made the sudden jump from 10 dollars per room to 100 dollars per room. Don’t let the small numbers fool you, there’s a huge difference between the players from the 10 dollar table and the 100 dollar table. Take the tables gradually. Never make sudden jumps. I know it’s tempting but you got to fight those urges. If you don’t you might lose everything you’ve worked hard to gather in days, weeks and even months. In just a matter of minutes you might go back to square one. And that’s never a good thing. Only if you would learn from it.
